ASX Investing Tips

Investing in equities has somewhat become a necessity to preserve and grow wealth for investors. With record low interest rates and bond yields low, equity markets have become the next safest option for investors.

Below are some of the FAQs that we have been asked:

The easiest way to buy stocks in Australia is by first opening an online brokerage account with an ASX stockbroker and transferring funds to cover your purchases. Then pick the stocks you want to purchase and submit an order on ASX trading hours. That is, between 10am and 4pm. Not all stockbrokers charge the same amount as commissions. It is important to go over all the charges and minimum trading amounts associated with a broker before opening an account.

Here, you would need to open an online brokerage account with a stockbroker who has access to US stocks. There are quite a few brokers now – such as Stake and eToro that offer a pathway into the US markets for zero-brokerage fees. You would then have to transfer funds, which will be converted to USD at either the spot rate or the spot rate + a spread charged by the broker. Essentially, investing in US stocks is cheaper than investing in the ASX because of the lower costs involved in investing.

Like buying US stocks, you would need to find a broker who offers access to the Chinese stock markets. Keep in mind the brokerage commission and foreign exchange fee that is charged prior to opening your account. On opening your account, you will be able to submit orders that will be executed during Chinese market working hours.

The NYSE operates between 9.30am and 4pm US eastern time. The US stock market also has a pre-marker trading session where some trading activity occurs between 8.00am and 9.30am US eastern time every trading day.

The first step to selling short is looking for a broker who offers short selling. The broker would then find an existing shareholder who is willing to lend his shares for a price. These borrowed stocks can then be sold and bought back when the price drops. Once you buy back the stocks at a lower price, the borrowed stocks would have to be replenished and the rest of the amount is your profit from the short sell.

The best stock to invest in is very subjective and depends on a wide array of factors. It is important to figure why you want to enter the position – for instance, if it is to diversify your current portfolio or it can be because you like the sector or the stock in the short term or long term. We recommend you seek professional advice prior to making investment decisions.

Australia has one stock exchange - The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) located in Sydney. It was formed in 1999 when the Sydney Futures Exchange merged with the Australian Stock Exchange. The ASX is one of the top stock exchanges in the world and is home to over 2000 stocks.
